Our research not only sheds new light on our collections but also increases our understanding of the world, and is shared with a wide audience through exhibitions, publications and our learning programme. Loans of objects to local and international venues mean more people than ever can enjoy our treasures. We also offer free advice, training and support through our knowledge exchange programme, and by administering the National Fund for Acquisitions we help museums across Scotland enhance their collections.
National Museums Scotland welcomes formal and informal research enquiries about our collections and specimens that are on display at our four museum sites or held at our National Museum Collections Centre, Granton, Edinburgh (NMCC).
During essential building work, as part of our Heritage Lottery Funded capital project, we regrettably have to restrict access to collections, specimens and staff at NMCC. This general restriction is forecast to remain in place until Summer 2016 although access to particular collections may be possible during this time. This is both for the safety of visitors and to ensure that building work can be completed on schedule.
Alternative arrangements may be made, to view objects at one of our sites, subject to availability of staff to assist with locating and making objects available.
