Physical description

Man's double-breasted frock coat of fine black cloth (wool cloth), centre front fastening with ten black fabric covered buttons, reinforced broad lapels and fold-down collar. Front opening, lapels and collar all trimmed with a narrow piped edge of black wool braid. Narrow fit sleeves, gathered slightly into the shoulder seam, flat cuffs delineated with a narrow piped seam of black wool braid and fastening with three small black fabric covered buttons. Slightly flared skirt to coat, extending to lower thigh, centre back pleats of skirt trimmed with four black fabric covered buttons. Sleeves lined with bleached cotton and brown velvet at cuffs, inside back lined with black twill cotton, inside front and back of skirt partly lined with brown glazed twill cotton in four separate panels: British, c.1840
