National Museums Scotland was gifted a wonderful collection of design which was amassed during second half of the 20th century. The collectors had a passion for Modernism that inspired them to fill their home with works in glass, ceramic, wood, metal and plastic by a number of leading Nordic and British designers and manufacturers from this crucial period in the history of Modernist design.

Characterised by simplicity and functionality, and inspired by the nature, landscape, and climate of the north, Nordic design emphasised the pleasures of domesticity, and the ideal that beautiful and useful objects should be affordable for all.
