The Picture Library of National Museums Scotland comprises a vast wealth of material from our museums.

The library contains pictures from:

History, science and the arts are covered from Scotland and abroad; from archaeology to airships, gold to golf balls and daggers to dodos, we have it all!

Picture research

Picture research is undertaken quickly and efficiently and curatorial advice about the objects themselves is always at hand. Any queries large or small are welcomed.

Commercial use

Images from National Museums Scotland are available from the Picture Library for reproduction in publications, film, television and other media.

A reproduction fee is charged for the use of any image and this fee will depend on the usage and rights required. Discounted rates are available in some circumstances. Reproduction fees do not include the supply of photographic material and this is charged at a separate rate. Customers should note that supply fees are payable even if the image is not used.

Reproduction from secondary sources, 35mm slides or low res jpegs is strictly forbidden.

Offline delivery

If an image is available as a digital file it will be dispatched within seven days of ordering. New photography, scanning and photographic reprints will take a little longer, but we aim to supply within 21 days. You will be advised if your order cannot be completed within this time.

Costs

Image prices start at £20 for up to two images and then £5 per image. Reproduction fees start from £10 and new photography fees start from £30. All fees exclude VAT. New Photography lead time is 6-8 weeks.
