Jamie Kunka is a self-taught ski-maker. Fusing tradition and innovation, he founded Lonely Mountain Skis in Birnam, Perthshire.

Kunka makes skis in response to the vibrant culture of backcountry skiing in Scotland. This culture has emerged against the backdrop of global concerns about our changing climate.

We visited Jamie in his workshop to understand the ideas and processes behind his work.

There are two pairs of skis by Kunka in the Museum collection, as well as an industry award and a book which provided inspiration and technical guidance. These objects document the link between craft, landscape, and climate change in Scotland.
