About Member Event: Annual Director Lecture - Unearthing the Peebles Hoard

Join Director Dr Chris Breward for this special Members' evening event. As this event is taking place during the festive period, we would like to invite you to join us and other Members for some complimentary mulled wine and mince pies before the lecture.

Joining Chris will be Dr Matthew Knight, Senior Curator of Early Prehistory, who will share details about the Peebles Hoard - an exciting new acquisition for the National Collection.

In 2020, this 3000 year old Bronze Age hoard was found during metal-detecting in the Scottish Borders. Led by the Treasure Trove Unit, archaeologists from National Museums Scotland, including Dr Knight, undertook the challenging task of excavation. This revealed decorative bronze fittings, perhaps for a horse or vehicle, a complete sword, and material that rarely survives such as leather, wood, fibres and textiles.

Following an intensive four years of excavation, analysis and cataloguing, the hoard can now be regarded as one of the most significant hoards ever found in Scotland.

Dr Knight will share more about the urgent task we now face to preserve this remarkable collection of objects, so that they, and the stories they hold, can be studied and shared for generations to come.
