About Relaxed Magic Carpet
Join us for a relaxed Magic Carpet session as we explore the museum through interactive songs, rhymes, and sensory play.
This is a monthly, relaxed version of our Magic Carpet event, for babies, toddlers and children aged 0-6 with additional support needs or for anyone who would prefer a calmer session and a slightly more relaxed pace. This is not a set age range for participants and we welcome all families who feel they may enjoy these sessions.
The Magic Carpet introduces you and your little one to some of the wonderful objects and themes in the museum in a fun and gentle way through songs, stories, rhymes, actions and sensory play.
Sessions last 45 minutes which includes settle and chat time and free play. These sessions will have a reduced capacity and will take place within an enclosed space. Families are welcome to come and go during the session if needed.
Please note that children with additional support needs or neurodivergent children who would still feel comfortable attending our standard Magic Carpet sessions are welcome to do so. The relaxed sessions are for children and parents/carers who might prefer a more supported session with reduced numbers in an enclosed space rather than on gallery.
If you have any questions or would like more information before you book, please contact us at communities@nms.ac.uk or 0131 247 4313.
On the day
- If you are visiting with a pram or buggy we advise you to use the Tower Entrance at the corner of Chambers Street and George IV Bridge.
- A buggy park is available in the Kingdom of the Scots gallery on Level 1. Otherwise, please keep your buggy with you at all times.
How to get to the Seminar Room
Your Magic Carpet leaders will meet you at the Tower Entrance and lead you to the Seminar Room.
If you would prefer to make your own way to the Seminar you need to use the Learning Centre stairs or lift at the back of the museum past the Millennium Clock.
Our friendly Visitor Experience staff will be happy to help and show you the way.
On the Magic Carpet
- We want to keep the Magic Carpet a comfortable and safe space for all so please remove your shoes before you sit down.
- If at any point you need to stand up, walk around, take some time out to settle your little one please do so.
- Adults are usually seated with their child on the Magic Carpet so they can play together but if you require additional seating for health or comfort reasons please let us know.
- Adults are responsible for their child at all times.
Feeding and changing
- Please feel free to give your little one milk or water during the session.
- We kindly ask that no other snacks are consumed on the Magic Carpet.
- Tables will be available in the Seminar Room for any other snacks.
- At the start of each session we will let you know where the nearest baby changing facility is and also public seating with backs should this be easier for feeding.
