
Roof Terrace
Make your way up to the Roof Terrace (Level 7) for an unforgettable view of the Edinburgh skyline.
From this vantage point you can see all across Edinburgh - spotting famous sites throughout the city, including Edinburgh Castle, the skyline of the Old Town, St Giles Cathedral and Arthur's Seat. You can also admire 'Hutton Roof', four sandstone sculptures on display by artist, Andy Goldsworthy.
The terrace is a hidden gem that attracts lots of wildlife, including bird life and insects.
Good to know
- The terrace is open from 10:00 - 16:45
- Access is via the stairs from the Industry and Empire gallery on Level 5 or via the Terrace Lift
- The terrace is strictly a no smoking area.

Stairs and lifts
Stairs
Access is via the stairs from the Industry and Empire gallery on Level 5. After exiting the gallery there are three flights of spiral staircases in order to reach the terrace.
Lifts
There is also lift access via the Terrace Lift.
Seating
There are wooden benches on the terrace if you require a seat.
Toilets
There are toilets on most levels of the museum, including accessible toilets and baby changing facilities. There is a Changing Places (U) toilet in the Entrance Hall on Level 0.
