Dr Lore Troalen
Responsible for: scientific research and investigation across the museum’s collections, management of the scientific laboratories at the National Museums Collection Centre.
Expertise: developing and implementing analytical research programmes across a broad and complex collection.
Lore holds significant expertise in the use of non-invasive and micro-destructive analytical techniques for the study of the museum’s collections. Her areas of interest include the characterisation of natural and synthetic dyestuffs in historical objects using chromatographic and spectroscopic approaches.
Lore is experienced in project design, planning, delivery and management; student and postdoctoral recruitment, training and supervision; grant writing; as well as procurement policies and procedures.
At National Museums Scotland, Lore plays a central role in undertaking and facilitating cross-disciplinary research on the collections and securing significant research grants. She has an extensive professional network with external collaborations in the UK and internationally.
Lore is a voting member of the ICOM Conservation Committee, a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. She is also a member of the Electron Microscopy Committee of the Royal Microscopical Society, and an invited expert of the DIM Matériaux anciens et patrimoniaux in France. She is a confident presenter and an enthusiastic advocate for the profession.
