Museum on the Move - National Museum of Flight
About Museum on the Move - National Museum of Flight
In this hands-on session, pupils help us plan to move one of our aeroplanes. Working together they solve a series of maths-related problems, culminating in a removal truck coding challenge.
In partnership with Maths Week Scotland.
What will my pupils do in the workshop?
Pupils will be taken to look at Concorde, before heading to the Education Centre to help us work out how best to move it.
Working in groups of four pupils will:
- Discuss the steps that need to be taken when planning to move such a large and valuable object
- Collaborate on a series of maths related activities which involve weighing, measuring and building models with Lego
- Finish the session with our very popular removal truck coding challenge
This workshop is perfect for team building and can act as a rich, holistic assessment tool. We like to reveal to the pupils at the end of the session that they have been doing maths all along, so you may like to focus on the team challenge aspects of the workshop when describing it to your class.

National Museum of Flight (NMoF) Bus Bursary Policy: Terms and Conditions
Eligibility and Access Policy for Bus Bursary
As part of our commitment to inclusive education and community engagement, the National Museums of Flight is pleased to offer support for the cost of transport to schools located in areas designated as SIMD 1 and 2, based on the Scottish Government's Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). This is for the school year 2024/25 only and is a limited fund so it is likely that not all applicants will be successful. The following terms and conditions apply:
Eligibility Criteria
- SIMD Designation: Schools must be located in areas classified as SIMD 1 or SIMD 2 to qualify for free workshops.
- Verification: Eligibility will be verified using the latest SIMD data provided by the Scottish Government. Schools may be required to provide documentation or additional information to confirm their eligibility.
Availability
- Limited: There will be no more than £300 per school.
- Advance Booking: Schools are encouraged to book early to secure a bursary, as they are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Waiting List: In the event that the fund is spent before the end of the school year, eligible schools can be placed on a waiting list and will be notified if funding becomes available.
Terms of Participation
- Value for Money: Schools are expected to find the least expensive coach available to them and to fill that coach. It will normally be expected that the school book a 50-100 seat coach and bring two classes.
- Cancellations: Schools must notify NMS at least two weeks in advance if they need to cancel a booking. Where cancellation incurs a fee from the bus company the school will be responsible for paying this fee.
- Feedback: Participating schools may be asked to provide feedback on the workshops to help us improve our educational offerings. Participation in feedback activities is appreciated but not mandatory.
- Class cap: Workshop offer is limited to 4 classes from a school for each school session.
Application Process
- Application Form: Interested schools must complete the appropriate section in the booking request form.
- Supporting Documents: Schools may need to submit supporting documents to verify their eligibility based on SIMD status.
- Confirmation: Successful applicants must receive a confirmation email with details of their booking before making a financial commitment.
- Coach Booking: The school will be responsible for booking the coach and then the National Museum of Flight will pay the coach company direct.
- Cost: Should the school book a coach costing over £300 they school will be responsible for paying the excess amount.
We are dedicated to making our educational resources accessible to all and look forward to welcoming eligible schools to National Museums Scotland.
By participating in our workshops, schools agree to adhere to the above terms and conditions. NMS reserves the right to modify these terms and conditions at any time.
